Unlawful possession of firearms or weapons, described in Georgia Code § 16-11-123 (2012), is among the most common weapon violations in our state, and it specifically applies to the possession of sawed-off shotguns, sawed-off rifles, machine guns, dangerous weapons generally and gun silencers.

It is a felony which is punishable by up to five years in prison. You can also be charged with a misdemeanor for discharging a firearm on another person's property without permission (§ 16-11-104), or within 150 feet of a public highway or street (§ 16-11-103), as well as for carrying a weapon without a license when you are legally prohibited from doing so.
